My Students
My students are from rural and suburban areas. They come from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and religious backgrounds.
Reading is of vital importance to my school culture, and my students enjoy having access to a wide variety of books, both for information and entertainment.
My students love to visit the school library frequently, and many of them live miles away from a branch of the local public library. For some, the school library is the only library they ever visit. Additionally, some students' only access to books at all are those they check out from the school library.
My Project
My students come from many different cultural backgrounds: African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Asian American, white, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, etc. Most were born in the United States, but some are immigrants.
Students deserve to see themselves in the books they read. Additionally, students from different backgrounds should read about the experiences of others to develop empathy and acceptance. Diverse books not only help students see that their stories matter, but they also allow readers to discover their place in the larger world around them.
I would like to add more books to the library collection so that it more closely reflects the diverse backgrounds of my students and their families.
