The students in my classes come from a wide variety of backgrounds. I have kids who have read hundreds of books in their lives and kids who have never touched a book on their own. Our students are very competitive when it comes to group projects and they will go above and beyond to succeed.
I enjoy pushing my students to limits that they think are unreachable, but with persistence and love these goals can not only be reached, but accomplished.
My students read novels above grade level, apply complex connections between themes, and participate in group and independent projects throughout the entire year.
Our classroom is our family, and we do anything for family.
My Project
The Lone Star reading list is developed by public and school librarians from the Young Adult Round Table. The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6, 7, or 8 to explore a variety of current books. The newest award-winners have recently been announced, and my students are eager to get their hands on them.
By having access to these diverse genres, students are pushed out of their comfort zone of choice reading.
The Texas Lone Star list offers many genres including important historical events like the Holocaust, fantasy novels to get lost in different worlds, and realistic fiction to find a life to relate to your own. "Not if I Save you First" and "Ghost Boys" have been passed around like crazy this year- I cannot keep them on my shelves.
My students will benefit greatly from the diversity of these books specifically chosen for middle-schoolers like them. Students will be able to find a "just right" book to get lost in.
