Mrs. Bialk from Middleton WI is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

We Need Diverse Books (Part 3)

My students need a collection of diverse books which create a mirror for everyone to see themselves represented positively in the literature available in our classroom.

My Students

I work in a culturally diverse school community where differences are embraced and celebrated. Teachers and students work together to build a community where all learners can feel safe and valued.

As young, excited learners, my students approach each and everyday with unprecedented zeal.

They enter the classroom with smiles on their faces, ready to learn and discover something new. I am constantly inspired by their curiosity and optimism. They remind me how exciting it is to learn new things. They motivate me to be the best teacher I can be.

My Project

Any book lover can identify a moment when they first met a character in a book who they wished could be their best friend. It seemed like that character just "got them" and they could identify on a deep level with the things that character wanted, needed, and felt. It was almost as if when they were reading about that character, they were looking in a mirror at themselves.

All children deserve to find their best friend in a book.

Someone who looks like them, thinks like them, talks like them, and experiences the same struggles and joys as them. This project will help me make sure that all of the students in my classroom can find a character like that in our classroom library. It will also help ensure that students meet characters who are different from themselves as well.

For this project, I am requesting a variety of books with characters from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, religious, familial, and linguistic backgrounds in order to help my library to better represent the students who use it. Doing this has two distinct and important effects on my students. First, it allows students to find books that will serve as mirrors for them; in other words, it allows students to find characters who they identify with because they serve as reflections of themselves and the worlds in which they live. Second, it allows students to find books that will serve as windows for them; in other words, books that help them better understand the lives and experiences of people who are different from themselves.
