Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help our emerging bilingual students build learning habits for success through collaboration! My students are lively, intelligent multilinguals who are building up their English academic language and learning to transfer knowledge and skills between languages. Our classroom utilizes collaborative, student-centered structures, which are completely new for some of my students. I want to teach my students how to own their own learning, from being able to work collaboratively with any classmate right down to knowing how and where in the room they learn best. All of my students come from low-income homes and some have not yet experienced a lot of success in the school environment. I want them passionately engaged in the learning process. Right now, there are no chairs in my classroom. Students will be arriving next week and be forced to sit on the floor or stand at tables. New chairs, or any chairs, will show our students that we care about the quality of their learning and give them appropriate spaces to successfully engage in the learning process.
My Project
Imagine students arriving to school on the first day of the year. They are nervous. Many may feel uncomfortable speaking English, and when they get to their classroom, they have to spend 2 hours sitting on the floor because there are no chairs at any of the tables.
Chairs are a necessity for student learning and we have none!
What kind of message does that send to students? Already, budget cuts in our district have ensured that we do not have access to the same quality of materials that other districts have access to. Yet, teachers and administrators pour their hearts and souls into our students, taking on the responsibilities of painting, cleaning, buying, and finding furniture. I do not want my students to believe that they are not important or good enough to have chairs in their classroom.
I have acquired tables for collaborative learning. I have set up a comfort corner and a cozy library. Our classroom will be a place where students can feel invested and proud of their learning. The only thing we need to get started is chairs.
