This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

After our students fully master the basic multiplication and division facts we move into more complicated math problems. These problems involve multi-step math equations for which sometimes a calculator is needed. Using calculators in math is a benefit for students to progress as mathematicians.

We are a rural community located in Oregon.

Most of the students are from migrant families and are of poor socioeconomic status. They are hardworking students who genuinely want to succeed. Our school is approximately 100 years old, and we are in the middle of seeking a local option for much needed funds for improvements and supplies. Our district and families simply do not have the funds available to help our students.

My Project

Students will be able to concentrate more on steps and procedures and dwell on missed computations. Simple silly mistakes will be eliminated with the use of these calculators. Students will be able to focus on grade level skills and requirements and learn more advanced concepts.

Students in the 5th grade are doing much more than simple addition and multiplication.

They are engaged in multi-step problems that require deeper thinking to understand and solve. These calculators can help them focus more on the deeper thinking aspect of the lesson and not be bogged down by the simple skills.
