Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of picking out your first book to read on your own? Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations.
This is my first year teaching and my classroom library is full of yard sale finds, hand-me-downs and donations.
I work at a Title One school in a first grade classroom.
My students are lively and creative. They LOVE to read fiction and non-fiction books. About 75% of my students speak English as a second language and most of their parents speak limited English. Without a parent to read English with at home, it is even more important that my students receive excellent reading instruction on their individual reading level. What better way to get kids excited about reading than giving them books on their level that peak their interests as well!
My Project
Because I am a new teacher, my classroom library is an assortment of books I collected from thrift stores and yard sales. I have very few leveled readers, so the majority of my students are not able to read most of the books in my library. In order to give me students confidence and instill the joy of reading, I need more leveled book sets so my students can be successful when reading independently.
I have also included several of my personal favorite read alouds that can be used to introduce topics such as holidays, beginning of the year jitters, sharing, diversity, etc.
My students would be THRILLED with the choices of books to read on their level!
I will be able to use the books across all content areas. Additional books and leveled readers in my classroom library would increase student independence and help spark a love for reading.
