Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In order to provide an opportunity for rich content understanding within this unit, we need books supporting the theme for extended learning.
My students attend a wonderfully diverse community school.
We have a large special needs population, many English as a Second Language learners, and a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced school lunch, indicating an economic disadvantage. Despite of the challenges facing my school and students, we are considered a "Top Gains" school in our state, having improved test scores greatly in the past few years.
My Project
This year, we will be using a Common Core State Standards aligned, comprehensive curriculum that connects reading, science, and social studies content areas. This particular unit focuses on the importance of water around the world. These books will be used to scaffold my students' understanding of this topic, and enrich their learning opportunities. We will also be able to use these books to compare and contrast literary types, author's purpose, and content.
These books will make my students more aware of global challenges, which is of utmost importance in today's society.
It will also lead to an appreciation of the natural resources of which we in America have easy access.
