I teach on a military base. My students move around a lot and that inconsistency affects their learning. I am a military wife so I understand that moving is stressful! Therefore, I have students that are advanced and others that are below level and I need a variety of books to meet their needs.
My students are third graders on a military base in Kansas.
This school is considered high poverty due to the number of students that qualify for free/reduced lunch based on their parent/s income. The children in my class come from all over the country and are from every race and creed. I have several English Language Learners and Special Education students in my class this year. Due to frequent moving during the school year, my students are on different reading levels. I have some students reading on first grade level and some reading on a fifth grade level! My classroom library just does not have that wide of a variety and I would like my students to be reading on their specific instructional level. The research shows that reading on their level and taking Accelerated Reading quizzes on books on their level leads to significant improvement. My students love to read, I just have to provide them with the materials they need!
My Project
The books I chose are a mixture of classic novels and high interest books to inspire my students and boost their love of reading. I requested books on a wide range of reading levels to accommodate the range in my classroom. The books I chose are all Accelerated Reading books and my students will be able to take quizzes on them after they read. I will be able to track their progress and growth using the data from the quizzes they take. At the end of every day I take the time to conference with 4-5 children on the book they are independently reading. We look at their Accelerated Reading Log and quiz scores and discuss the book they are currently reading. I know if this grant is funded, it won't be long before I see dramatic improvement in their reading levels.
