Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like learning something challenging for the first time? You probably felt like you were stuck in an episode of Charlie Brown while your teacher droned, "Whaa-whaa-whaa" for what seemed like an eternity. Now imagine learning something in a language you don't understand.
I teach kindergarten to twenty-three English language learners in a high-poverty neighborhood in Chicago.
Most of my students are emergent readers and I am trying to prepare them for upcoming tests by teaching them comprehension skills while teaching them how to read. Although we have books in our classroom library, many of them are in English, which my students are just learning. Since so many of our students are Latino, it is crucial to have texts in their native language.
My Project
The books I am requesting will be used in order to have a wider selection for our daily read-aloud. Since my students attend school 180 days a year, I need to make sure I have a substantial amount of books in our library so they do not have to hear the same story over and over again. With these books, I will teach my students different comprehension skills, such as comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, predicting, and summarizing which they will eventually need to be familiar with in order to do well on their standardized assessments.
It is becoming increasing difficult to engage my students with stories that I read to them in the beginning of the year because now they are learning to recall more information.
When I pick up a story we have already read, my students always feel the need to remind me, "Teacher, we already read that one." These new books will engage my students in the storyline, resulting in better comprehension and a smooth start to our day!
