Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the low income area that my students live in they know only the few streets around their neighborhood. A field trip to the San Jose Library was a major deal for them this year. As they get older, as my students are fourth graders, they become more aware of their circumstances and the gang influence around their neighborhoods.
To counteract this fact, I have been running during and after school book clubs to keep students busy and engaged in learning. The book club was quite a success this year with students taking home and reading \"Stuart Little\", \"Dear Mr. Henshaw\", and \"Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nihm\". Students read a chapter at home and then we discuss what they read in class. Those that need help stay with me after school and we read together. At the end of each book we would complete big projects, like creating a shoe box bedroom for Stuart Little to live in.
What we found this year was that we simply did not have enough books for everyone or enough books to last the school year. My students want to learn and are exicted about learning. As a teacher I need more resources to provide them with good learning opportunities. By proving them with quality books (\"Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing\" and \"Holes\") to read we are helping these Enlish Language Learners to progress in their fluency and comprehension while at the same time providing an opportunity for them to become life long lovers of reading. It can not be understated how much this at risk population needs a quality education and an alternative avenue to turn to aside from the gang influence among their neighborhoods!
