I teach Spanish in Hartshorne Oklahoma. We serve mainly blue collar families as well as students from an American Indian boarding school four miles to the north. My students are absolutely amazing! They are friendly, respectful and kind. They are curious and inquisitive and genuinely interested in learning Spanish. I am often greeted in the halls with a hearty "buenos días," and it puts a big smile on my face when I hear words and phrases studied in class being used at the lunch table. My kids have gone above and beyond by writing authentic, original letters to community members in Spanish and I even have a group of newly licensed drivers who have endeavored to put their communication skills in practice at the local Mexican store!
The problem is that our students love to read, but our selection of reading material in Spanish is extremely limited.
We need a books to satisfy their voracious appetite for reading.
My Project
Reading is an important part of learning a language, and our Spanish language book selection is extremely limited. Our students love to read, but we just do not have the books.
Due to COVID-19, students have spent more and more time working on a computer, which has it's advantages, but there is no substitute for a good book.
The books will give students the opportunity to read Spanish at their level, building their vocabularies and self-confidence.
Upon receiving the new books, students will begin independent reading immediately and it will become a regular component of our class. All students will do timed readings and keep vocabulary journals.
