Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my first year teaching a fifth grade class in a Spanish dual language program in Brooklyn. My students include a combination of English language speakers and native Spanish language speakers. My students are wonderful bilingual readers and writers. They love science and math, and they are creative and come to school every day ready lo learn. Our school provides a safe space for children of all cultures to come together and learn. I want them to have a great year.
My Project
My students are learning in two languages. They love reading and writing in Spanish and English. They are also learning science and social studies in both languages, but they often encounter new words that they don’t know. Unfortunately, we don't have dictionaries for the whole class. I need to have a set of dictionaries so many students can use them at the same time. They also need books in Spanish that will inspire them to become bilingual readers.
In a bilingual classroom, one of the essential skills that students learn is how to use a dictionary so they can grow as readers and writers.
