Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ninth grade students currently practicing sentence structures and trying to get more comfortable participating and sharing their ideas and work with the class. My students range from typical to ADD, ADHD, dyslexic, low income, and I have one with a hearing impairment. Many are English language learners and struggle with finding their voice in class discussions. We practice Socratic seminars, class debates and sharing their individual work. My students are currently struggling with staying focused and finding the importance in being active participants in class discussions. They are great students, but are used to being taught to sit and listen to the teacher's lecture quietly. They are often shy and timid, and struggle with how others will view their response. I am looking for a fun interactive way to emphasize they are important, and their thoughts and ideas are important. They have an important voice in my class!
My Project
More and more of our students are reporting symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem. Students cannot learn if they are feeling overwhelmed with emotions to serious issues that cannot be discussed in a classroom setting full of their peers. This has been an issue that has occurred more and more frequently and sending them to the counselor is not helping. At times, they simply need a quiet place to sit for a few minutes to unwind and release their emotions. This quiet place will allow for reflection and perhaps even offer a setting that may be more conducive for a real conversation about the issue at hand.
Many students have reported suicidal thoughts and an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness.
We have amazing students who work hard and are highly motivated. They know the importance of their GPA, state test scores and passing grades. By allowing them this opportunity for a quiet space, they will be able to minimize their time outside of class and stay focused when they are present in class. Please help us improve the mental state of our amazing students.
