Kozminski Community Academy is a Chicago Public School located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. It serves over 500 African-American students in grades Pre-K through eight. 90 percent of the students are served free or reduced priced lunches. Our School is in the process of rebuilding its band program. Many of our instruments and supplies are in desperate need of repair or replacement. One of the many instruments that needs replacement is our classroom piano. There is a piano in the bandroom that is old, battered, and needs restoration. The cost of repairing this piano is beyond our budget at Kozminski. I do not use a piano since the state of the classroom piano is beyond repair. The students perform independently while I sing for them or clap a steady beat. Many music classrooms today are moving away from the traditional piano to digital keyboards. They have weighted keys to feel appropriate to the touch. Their sound is a digital sample of a real piano, which allows it to be utilized more successfully in a performance than was previously possible. Most digital pianos also have computer chips which enable the instructor to store accompaniments and samples to use at class time. Therefore, the teacher can assist students while they play and not be stuck behind a piano. The digital piano I am interested in is sold through The Woodwind and Brasswind. The model is the Casio AP24 Digital Piano. Our principal and I believe that having the experience of a piano accompaniment is beneficial to all aspiring music students. It helps them to establish pitch and rhythmic skills, and allows their performance experiences to be more complete. Most music classrooms have a working keyboard and I want to see that our band students have the same resources and learning opportunities.
