My students come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a kaleidescope of experiences and skills to the classroom. The particular group of students in our publications class is mixed seventh-grade and eighth-grade. Some of the students are considered to be strong, gifted writers, while others struggle with the process. Publications is a place for all of these students to thrive. Efforts are made to meet students where they are so that they can tell their stories and the stories of others.
My students work hard, and they deserve to expand their learning with the best tools available.
Students already have a core language arts class, so they need engaging, authentic experiences in publications so that they can apply those valuable skills they learn in other classes to the real world. They love projects, they love to be up and moving, and they love to see their actual work published and available for others.
My Project
Currently, students at our school have to use personal devices to create videos in student publications. This is not ideal for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it is difficult to teach children HOW to shoot and edit video when every device is different. While we do have 1:1 devices, these devices do not have video enabled. We have found ways to do some cool projects using only audio, which is available, but video would help make this a true "publications" course! Therefore, we would like to have a few iPad Minis to use just for publications. While the main use for the iPad will be shoot and edit short videos created by students, the versatility of the product will allow it to be used for our photojournalism projects, learning apps, and school newspaper editing.
The addition of this tool in our publications class will open up a completely new realm of exploration and application of the concepts we discuss in the classroom.
