My students need more opportunities to choose where they will sit as they work and learn. This will allow them to take ownership of their learning with better concentration and memory.
As a teacher, I love fostering the love of learning, and especially the love of reading, in my students. My 5th grade students are a very eclectic group!
Their talents and interests spread far and wide; from drama to athletics to gaming, however, they all share the joy of learning and coming to school each day.
Our classrooms are set up in large pods. This means there are actually four classes in one large room, or pod. This environment is perfect for team teaching and collaboration among teachers and students. The students love having the opportunity to work together and work in groups.
The pods have also enabled the students to create lifelong friendships and bonds with students that they may not have had the opportunity with had they been in closed classrooms. On the other hand, the pods can make for a lot of distractions. Though the students have spent their elementary career learning in these pod classrooms, it is still very easy for them to lose focus through out the day. It is loud and busy, but my students love this kind learning!
My Project
When students are given a choice in their learning they begin to take ownership. I have seen that happen in the last two years as I have begun to implement flexible seating in the classroom. When my students come into my classroom they have the choice of where they want to sit. They have had the opportunity to choose to sit in a camp or beach chair, bean bag, or on the floor with a clip board and pillow. With this project, they would have additional seating and working options. The Surf Portable Lap Desks and the Laptop Bed Trays will give the students a portable surface which they can more anywhere in the room to work. They will also make a convenient platform for students to use to conference with one another on writing pieces. The SoftZone Floor Cushions are perfect for the students to use at our low tables and with the lap desks. They have handles making them easy to transport around the room.
As students grow, their learning needs will change.
Flexible seating allows students to sit in a manner that suits their learning needs. The products I have chosen will provide my students with more seating options which will benefit them as they grow and change.
