Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember going to the listening center with a small group of classmates and listening while a favorite story was read to you? It's like sitting on your parent's lap and having a special story time.
Currently, I teach in an elementary school in a low socio-economic community.
Our school is heavily populated with students who are learning to speak English. Our main focus is to prepare these students for what lies ahead of them. With the use of technology, I have been able to help my students access their learning more easily. Please take the initiative to help them achieve their goals and dreams of being proactive learners.
My Project
My students need a portable CD player, head phones, head phone jacks, and read along CDs & books. Part of our school day includes Independent Work Time. This time of day provides the students the opportunity to make choices about learning. Students can choose from a variety of differentiated activities and one of these activities includes time to listen to a story and completed a related comprehension activity. The listening center will help promote student comprehension and provide the opportunity to hear stories read by a good reading "model."
This project will serve two very important purposes in my classroom;
1.
Because many of my students come from homes where English is not spoken, or it is spoken as a second language, they don't have many opportunities to hear stories read by native English speakers.
2. Reading comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading and for struggling readers listening to a story and following the text in a book makes literature more accessible.
