Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"There is no substitute for books in the life of a child," said Mary Ellen Chase. Many of my kindergarten students come from homes that do not support literacy. They begin school without the experience of being read to on a regular basis.
My young learners LOVE books and are just beginning to learn how to put sounds together to start reading on their own.
During this exciting time they need all the support they can get. However, many of them do not get the support they need at home and begin kindergarten at a disadvantage. At our urban public school many of the children do not have books at home or come from homes where English is not their native language.
My Project
These MP3 players will allow them to read books that are engaging and fun even though they are too difficult for them to read on their own. MP3 players will be easy for the children to use and won't require as much storage space as cassette tapes, CDS, and players need.
My little learners will have the opportunity to experience more daily read alouds and will be able to choose the books they wish to hear. Students who are learning English as their second language will benefit from listening to books in English. Students can even sign out an MP3 player with a book to bring home for nightly reading.
Reading is such an important skill to have and these kindergartners deserve a great start!
Listening to books will increase their vocabulary, reading fluency, and decoding skills. By supporting their literacy development at this young age, they will have the foundation they need to succeed in school.
