Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our wonderful school is in a high poverty area in Chicago. My junior high students are polite, well-mannered, hard-working students who come from good homes. Many of my students are diverse learners; many come from another country or are first-generation Americans. They all face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, my students come into my classroom eager to learn and do their best every day. These students are extremely diverse in terms of academic ability. This diversity is great, but as a teacher, it can be a challenge to reach all my students when they are at different levels academically.
My goal is to make sure that all students, regardless of where they are academically, have all the tools they need to be successful and become lifelong learners.
Each and every one of them has the potential to be successful. I want to equal the playing field for my students so they have all the tools necessary to excel in school and in life.
My Project
Sphero is a great hands on tool to teach introductory coding. LEGO's Simple and Powered Machines are the perfect way to teach a STEM lesson in the classroom. Kids love to play with LEGOs, and what an opportunity that is for a hands-on relevant learning experience. My diverse learners will also benefit so much from these hands on lessons. STEM lessons encourage students to experiment, create and take ownership of their learning. It will give them a stronger foundation in science, technology, engineering, and math which will help them in the future with the competitiveness in the economy. The Sphero robot will help them learn coding. The LEGO Simple and Powered Machines is the perfect start for my students. The base plates will be used to create a LEGO wall where students can design and build their projects. STEM lessons are valuable for all students and my students will learn so much with these hands-on materials.
