Our One School, One Book event features The World According to Humphrey. After students have read the first book, they are going to come right to the library searching for more!
Kindergarten through fourth grade, students in my school love to read.
Whenever I introduce a new book into the library, it flies off the shelves. This is the first year I am working as a library media specialist. I am also new to this school district. My favorite part of this experience is hearing students say that library is their favorite special. They are excited about learning and appreciate any new books I am able to bring to the collection. Our library has been overlooked for a long time and needs many upgrades. I am doing my best to bring attention to our library within the district. In my last school where I worked as a classroom teacher, it was very easy to get a set of books like this. We could ask the PTO or reading consultant for the funds. This is not the case at this school.
My Project
Once I heard about the book from our "One Book, One School" event at my school, I talked about it with my own children at home. My fourth grader was really excited and said he loved the series. I am currently reading the story with my first grader and she looks forward to the chapter we read each night. It is very difficult to find a book that can engage both very young and older students. A new set of Humphrey books would engage all of our students. In my experience as a classroom teacher, once a student gets hooked on the first book in a series, they go on a quest for the other books.
Right now we do not have any of the Humphrey books on our shelves.
I want to give these students something to look forward to after the book ends. I not only want them to have the great story to read, but also the meaningful lessons they will learn from each of the books.
