Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When 5th Graders come to art, they spend the first 10 minutes drawing in their sketchbooks. They can choose the daily topic or they can imagine their own free draw. Developing their drawing and imagining skills is enhanced by practice, practice and more practice. This is something 5th Graders love!
Many of my 5th Graders have been here since kindergarten when they immigrated to our country.
Their families are very close knit and the parents have high hopes for their children's success. Art is no different. Many parents are artistic and share that love of art with their children. They come from very impoverished situations but often my students will recognize a famous painting because they have a print of it hanging up at home.
One of our favorite festivals is our Spring Arts Festival where families can become engaged in several diverse activities. Art teachers are encouraged by the student's imaginations and creativity. It is surprising to see them come up with innovative solutions to problem solving on their own. That is what art is all about! The freedom to discover, explore and experiment.
My Project
My students need 2 class packs of 50 Nasco Practice Sketchbooks or 100 Sketchbooks total. Every year, I ask Donorschoose.org donors to help fund sketchbooks for my 5th Graders. Because many of my students are impoverished, a sketchbook is something they relish and cherish. It is refreshing to see students so excited about a sketchbook for their own! It is kept in the art room all year.
The first part of our art class is spent drawing. This is also a place where they can take notes from art history discussions, or do sketches for larger projects in drawing, painting, ceramics or glass. The sketchbook is an important place to try new ideas, problem solve or work on new solutions to an assignment.
This request is for a sketchbook for each of 100 of my 5th Graders is very important.
My students love drawing and especially when it is in their own sketchbook. We will use the 100 sketchbooks for many different activities in art. Students can also use it as a journal, and it shows individual growth from the beginning pages to when they are ready to leave 5th Grade in the Spring. Please consider donating to our project. We are Title One and your generous help is appreciated by all of us!
