Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Smiling faces fuel our after school program! This past school year I have been fortunate enough to sponsor an after school program for some amazing 5th grade students at my elementary school.
Our club consists of a dynamic group of 5th grade students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
We are at a low income school in a suburb outside of a major city. This group of students that I had the privilege to work with this past school year were infused with curiosity, vigor, and patience. Together we learned about movie making software, digital photography, copyright laws, and budgeting both time and money.
My Project
As a first year, 3rd grade teacher I did not anticipate the impact and difficulties that this club would create. My school does not have room in our budget to fund this program, so I have had to rely on my own personal funds to make this project happen. Because many of the students that attend my school do not have a home computer, it was a top priority of mine to make our yearbook accessible to all students by formatting it on a DVD that can be played on a standard home DVD player. Also, we have had to use my personal digital camera to take photos throughout the year. I would like my students to have the materials that we need for our yearbook readily available. I will be sponsoring this club again next year and I would like to help my students create a yearbook that tops this years (and that will be hard to beat) by starting early!
A donation of a digital camera, DVDs, and accessories will help these students on a project that fosters a sense of community in my school.
This project is much more than an after school program. It gives students school pride, self confidence, ownership of a cooperative project, and a wide array of technology skills. Together we make memories that will last a lifetime!
