As a teacher in a low-income school district (56.6% free and reduced lunch), my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My classroom is an Early Childhood Special Education classroom so the majority of my students have a developmental delay in one or more of the following areas: social emotional, communication, adaptive behaviors, physical development, and cognitive development.
These students require differentiated instruction each and every day.
My students are extremely active due to their disability and age. We have fun every day learning through stories, play, music, and movement, academic skills, and many other activities. With flexible seating, students can be comfortable while learning, and not feel like they've come to a sterile room with sterile, boring seating. I want my children, who may not always be comfortable at home, to have a safe and comfortable place to learn.
My Project
My Preschool students love to be up, down, and all around. The learning that occurs in our classroom is fun, simply because we move and groove while we work. The standard chairs just aren't willing to move and groove with them.
Sitting still all day is not developmentally appropriate for a 4-5 year old children.
Although it is important for children to learn how to sit in a chair, it is important to provide them opportunities to acquire that skill slowly. The flexible seating options will help them acquire that skill while still letting them release their energy in a non-disruptive way.
This project will provide my students with alternative seating to meet the many needs they are displaying. They will be able to choose a seat that best fits their needs at the time. It may be that they choose an active chair to be able to wiggle in, a cube chair for some stability and own space, or a teeter popper for some back and forth movement and balancing.
