Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of the One-Way Dual Language program. They come to school with a huge range of language skills and many come to school with little to no understanding of English. Finding books in their native language can be a challenge. As a first year teacher my biggest investment has been books. I often browse second-hand stores, libraries, and yard sales. This has been great in building our English library, but Spanish titles can be more difficult to come by.
I want them to love reading and learning by finding comfort in books.
By building their reading skills in Spanish, their skills will grow across all areas of their learning.
We are a Title I school with a make up of 85% low income students. For many students, the only access to books and the only time to read comfortably will be in the classroom. My students take great pride in their materials and often partner read to take advantage of the books we do have. Your donation would allow them to read independently and connect with current titles. Books like Sofia Martinez also allow them to connect with texts in which they see themselves reflected on the page.
