My students make me proud every day. Seeing them persevering, problem-solving, and most importantly cheering on their classmates brings a smile to my face each day. Many of my students face struggles and challenges in their daily lives, but I see their dedication and the joy they find in learning is truly inspiring.
We work together to create a learning community where everyone is safe and feels valued.
During their time in my class, I work to show my students the rewards hard work brings, as well as to show them that our unique differences are to be celebrated and respected.
I teach in a Title I school with all of my students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. While our families want their children to be successful and there is great community support for the schools, I know that many students will not come to school prepared with the necessary supplies. I do my best to ensure that all students have what they need academically, physically, and emotionally during the time they are in my care.
My students love reading! They work incredibly hard during our small guided reading groups as we work together on new skills and reading strategies. But along with teacher-guided instruction, it is essential that students practice reading independently at their just-right level. In order to make independent reading more exciting, students must have a wide variety of high-interest books that are in good condition. Unfortunately, our current classroom library is not sufficient for the demand! After years of being handled by eager little readers, many of the books in our classroom library are tattered, torn, or falling apart.
Next year I will be lucky enough to 'loop up' to 2nd grade with my current 1st graders, which is very exciting!
But it also means I need to expand our classroom library in order to include higher reading levels, so that all my students can find a book that is just the right fit.
