My Students
I work in a public school in Virginia with children from all socioeconomic groups as well as academic levels. My reading and writing students are hard workers and love to learn! In my class, we focus on authentic learning - actual reading with diverse, challenging, and intriguing texts.
This year will be my first year teaching reading and writing to 5th graders! I plan to incorporate a variety of literature circles and novel studies during our reading block. Text selection is extremely important. It is vital that the texts are diverse, current, challenging, and captivating.
My Project
My class LOVES to read! Recently, we have incorporated the daily 14.2 into our schedule each day. This is 14.2 minutes of uninterrupted independent reading time for the students. This time is reserved each day for students to choose what they want to read - not what they are assigned!
We all know that students are more likely to read when they get to choose the books they read. Offering a variety of texts to my students is very important. The books selected in this project were specifically requested by my current 5th graders. These are the books, series, and topics they absolutely love!
