Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students are an energetic and motivated bunch. Their reading development and interests are as unique and diverse as the students themselves. What I love about my students, is that they come to school every day with a smile on their face, ready to learn. They are well mannered, polite and kind to each other. Our school is a Title I school with 74% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Our second language learner population is roughly 43% of our student body. Please help put more books in the hands of these outstanding students!
My Project
My first grade class is in need of new books, fiction and nonfiction. We need chapter books for our more advanced readers. The Magic Tree House is a great series that introduces students to chapter books; it's historical fiction for young readers. We also need "easy readers" for our students who are just learning to read. Dr.Seuss books are a classic, silly and a fun way to spark the love of reading in any child.
Research shows that students fall in love with reading when they are given time to read and learn in a classroom where books are valued.
My students have found their passion for reading. In our class they are allowed to choose books, at their reading level, that interest them. Flexible seating has also been provided to foster that love. With these new books, my students will continue to become more independent and engaged readers. Furthermore, it will allow them to take some ownership of their learning. Reading is the foundation for lifelong learning.
