Frank Serafini once said, “There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.” I believe this is true. Students who come into my room may not love to read, but I hope to instill a love of reading within them this year!
The only way to become a better reader is by reading.
This is what I tell my students every day when I talk about reading on their own. Some of my students have not yet discovered the magic that comes from reading a great book. I am looking to get a few books in my library that will be able to do that. My students come from various backgrounds. They all have a different story to tell. Some are eager to read, while others may be reluctant at first. Our school wants to instill a love of learning in each and every student that walks through our doors. I get to help with this goal by being the last teacher some of our students will have. I feel that it is my job to help readers of all levels find a passion for reading!
My Project
By the time students get to me in fifth grade, they need to be engaged. Fifth graders need to be into an engaging, mind boggling book. That is where this project comes into play. Several of my students have asked for the books that I am requesting. My students are requesting many books. My hope is that they see these books come in and want to jump right into the books! I have heard "Mrs. R, will you please order the next book in this series," and "Mrs. R we really need some books about football players" more times than I can count. My hope is to get them engaged in the books they WANT to read!
The donations to this project will have a major impact on my readers.
Students who have not yet found a book that they love will be given the opportunity to find and read an amazing book. Remember, there isn't a person who doesn't like reading. There are just people who haven't found the right book yet!
