Mrs. W. from UT is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

We Love to Read!

My students need a classroom library that includes 52 new beginning books with decodable text and early sight word text, including books such as "Sheep in a Jeep", "Rain Forest Animals", and "Go Away, Dog".

I am in my second year of teaching first grade at a Title I school. My students come from a variety of cultures and situations. They represent every type of person living in the United States of America - from upper middle class to poverty-level. It is an amazing experience to watch them meld together as a six and seven-year-old community. Though they are often so different from one another, their united desire is to learn to read and to read A LOT. Their reading levels range from pre-primer (just beginning to blend letter sounds into words) to third grade. That is a large range for first grade but not uncommon. Our typical day starts with welcoming handshakes, journal writing and sight word work. And then we enjoy "Reader's Workshop"! As I rotate teaching small differentiated reading groups, the students read leveled library books. They read independently or with community volunteers. My students love this hour each morning because after they have read their books, they can take an Accelerated Reading (AR) computer test to check their comprehension. We set personal goals at the beginning of each term which are motivating - although many would read lots of books anyway. I am making a request through Donors Choose to enlarge my classroom library, which is a vital component of Readers' Workshop. Not only do my students read each morning, they also need to take at least two books home every night. While our school library is wonderful, it must service many students. Often my first graders would like to be able to take a book home from our classroom library instead. I accommodate them as much as possible, but would love to have more books. My request is for books which cater to beginning readers - books that are phonics-based and decodable, books with basic sight words, and books with interesting stories, such as the Biscuit books, Flea Gets Wet and Loose Tooth. By helping to provide 52 additional books for our classroom library, you will encourage the love of reading in the lives of 25 boys and girls.
