Ms. Potocki from Chicago IL is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

We Love to Read! (Now We Just Need Some Books...)

My students need books for their freshman English class. Every year, books get destroyed or lost. My students need enough books so that every student can have one.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a public school in a large city. I teach Freshman English. My students are motivated, but many of them are just beginning to enjoy reading. They need enough books so that they each have their own copy of the texts that we are studying in class.

I work in a public school in a large city in a high poverty area.

My students are motivated young people, but not all of them read on grade level. It is so important that we have books that the students can take home and use to practice independent reading, but the school can't afford to keep replacing the books that are damaged or lost every year.

My Project

The "Book Thief" books will be used to complete a set of books that has been depleted, so that each student can have his/her own book. We use this text to introduce the Holocaust and to talk about issues of humanity and inhumanity. We finish this unit off with a visit to the Holocaust Museum in our city. The "Romeo and Juliet" books are to fill a need for students who read well below grade level. We read the text together, but there are some students who are unable (because of reading level) to comprehend the play without additional help. The texts that I have for the classroom do not have a companion guide to them, so these 15 books are to help build confidence in my lower-level readers.

Every book that a student reads gives that student the gift of new ideas and new experiences.

It is so important that my students have opportunities to access information and to build their independent reading skills and confidence.
