"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." - Dr. Seuss
I have 32 kindergarten students.
We have a diverse student population with many students who speak English as a second language. Although my students have different language levels, they all have one thing in common, they love to listen to stories! My students are engaged when stories are read to them fluently and with expression. When they are engaged and focused, students are exposed to new vocabulary and can also be active participants in classroom discussion about the stories.
My Project
My students need wireless headphones and a portable CD player. A wireless listening center would allow my students to listen to stories comfortably. Cords will not get tangled and they will not have to be huddled so closely around a radio. The listening center will provide my students with a feeling of independence when it comes to reading. Students will have the opportunity to hold a book and turn the pages by themselves as it is read to them. They will also have access to a variety of books on CD and not limited to "easy" books. A listening center will provide students with great examples of fluent reading and the opportunity to practice the comprehension skills that have been taught in a small group setting. English language learners will be exposed to new vocabulary words multiple times.
Everyone needs the opportunity to enjoy books.
Your donation will make books accessible to kids and help to instill the love of reading in my current and future kindergarten students.
