Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love the library. They love to read and they LOVE to listen to audiobooks and stories! Students are eager to read and share new books with their friends, but their favorite time in the library is when they get to check out the audiobooks!
My students come alive as they congregate at the audiobook shelves seeing what is available this week to check out this week.
Audiobooks are a wonderful leveler in any group of readers. Students of every reading ability have full access to interesting and challenging reading. For some the audiobook format broadens their reading, for struggling readers the audio format allows full access to text that would not have been available otherwise. And for English language learners the rewards are immeasurable.
There is nothing quite like seeing students "sneak" the audiobooks into the cafeteria to listen during lunch, or watching a struggling reader listen to Charlotte's Web over and over again - and then come to you to talk about it. But, audiobooks are not readily accessible without adequate quality headphones and this is a key problem in our Title One school.
My Project
My goal is to have good quality, over-the-ear headphones available for students to check out along with their favorite audiobooks.
Listening to audiobooks is FUN and using every available path to introduce reading as a fun thing to do is what the library is all about!
The problem is that that most of the audiobooks in our collection are loaded onto MP3 players that need really sturdy and reasonably high quality headphones in order to work properly. Many of our students have their own headphones to use, but a large number of our students can't afford good headphones and the dollar store headphones either don't work initially or break right away. Some headphone jacks even break off in the MP3 player, making the MP3 player unusable and needing to be replaced.
Audiobooks and recorded stories are an amazing tool for enticing kids into reading for pleasure - as a bonus there is much evidence that audiobooks also increase comprehension, vocabulary and reading ability. What a win-win that is! With little effort, audiobooks increase the depth and breath of reading and introduce students to new genres - and good headphones are a necessity for this to happen.
