"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."-Dr. Seuss.
I want my first graders to love reading and experience lots of adventures through books. Having a listening center equipped with Dr. Seuss books will help accomplish this goal!
My students are first graders in a high poverty elementary school in Delaware.
I teach reading and writing to 47 students with a wide range of abilities, including special education students, in our school's Spanish Immersion Program. I taught these students in kindergarten last year, and I am so excited to teach them again in first grade!
My students come to school every day ready to learn. They love to listen to stories I read aloud. Many of my students do not have books to read at home, so I use every opportunity I can to read to them at school.
My Project
Since I only have half of a day to teach my students to read and write (they spend the other half of the day in Spanish), I want to give them as many opportunities as I can to read books. While I am working with some of the students in small groups, the other students practice reading and writing skills independently. Since most of my students are just learning to read independently and I am busy working with students, a listening center will allow them to listen to stories by themselves and hear good examples of fluent reading. They will be able to improve their reading skills and experience many new adventures through listening to stories!
My students will be so excited to use a new listening center.
They will no longer have to use an old tape player! Luckily, I inherited a CD player and headphones at the end of last year. With your help, the listening center shelf and books with CDs will help complete my listening center. I plan to order more books with CDs through my monthly book orders to help build our listening library. I want to instill a love of reading in my students by giving them every opportunity to listen to stories!
