I am the library teacher in a high-needs urban district. Many of my students come from single-parent homes and some are refugees from other countries.
Regardless of their home circumstances, my students love to come to school and they are always excited about learning!
Their enthusiasm and motivation to learn make me want to be a better teacher and to make learning fun for them.
Unfortunately, most of my students have very limited access to any form of enrichment activities. Whenever I can, I try to expose them to new things and broaden their horizons.
My Project
Hatching baby chicks is the single most exciting thing I have done as a teacher over the last 20 years. It is an annual tradition that the students look forward to every spring -- and almost every student who comes back to visit talks about the chicks we hatched.
We have an incubator and the basic supplies we need to hatch the eggs and care for the baby chicks, but a brooder would be much safer than the clip-on light we currently use to provide heat for the chicks.
Almost as exciting as watching a baby chick peck its way out of a shell is seeing a butterfly emerge from the chrysalis the caterpillar created or seeing a ladybug transform before their very eyes. My students learn so much from these experiences and look forward to them every year.
