Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to play instruments and act out the songs they sing. Music K-8 contains songs that would let my students do all of that. My younger recorder students need more recorder materials to help them build the skills necessary to help them succeed in the Recorder Karate books- which is a hit!
My students are very energetic and love to play instruments.
I am the Music Teacher to approximately 435 students at a wonderful K-5 Title I elementary school. It is one of the oldest schools in the district. A lot of our families struggle to make ends meet financially, so asking each family to purchase their own recorder is not an option. Many of my students speak English as a second language so language is a struggle for them. Playing instruments and reading rhythms does not have a lot to do with written or spoken English so all kids can feel successful no matter what language skills they have. They like learning new things, especially if it relates to things they do or see at home. Some of their favorite songs on the radio can be used to teach them the correct skills they need to play recorder. These songs can be used as incentives to learn certain notes, rhythms, finger positions, or even the form of a song (the order of the parts of a song). All materials are used for many years.
My Project
The Music K-8 Magazines will be used to supplement the units of instruction for each grade level. I have not used these magazines before but have seen and heard how other music teachers in my district use them in their classrooms. Sometimes they contain popular music to help teach music concepts. This would be a big hit with my students. The magazine also contains songs that my students could perform for the winter and spring performances. The recorder sanitizer and recorder stands will help me to keep the recorders properly sanitized from year to year and even throughout the school year due to things like influenza. The beginning recorder books would allow my younger students to have extra practice to achieve basic recorder mastery before starting the Recorder Karate book we already have. My students are excited to be able to play Recorder Karate and always want to know what they get to play when they complete it. Recorder Karate 2 would allow them to progress and stay motivated.
Having these materials would help my students stay focused and motivated during class.
It would also give them something they could tell others about which would help improve their language and writing skills since many do not speak English fluently. Some students already do this and it keeps younger kids motivated to learn music because they see their older siblings playing the recorder and doing 'cool' things at the concerts, like acting out a song or playing an instrument during a song.
