I teach a second grade classroom at a Title I elementary school in Melbourne, Florida. These students come from low income/high poverty areas and about 90% qualify for free or reduced lunch. That being said, it has been my mission to cultivate a classroom full of comfort and kindness. My students genuinely love coming into the classroom every day.
My students LOVE to read!
They cherish their silent reading time every morning. We have a camping theme in our classroom, so they lounge with log shaped pillows and folding camping chairs while reading. It is our 20 minutes of calm every morning and sets the tone for our learning environment the remainder of the day. They also like to read immediately after completing their classwork. They enjoy filling their few spare minutes by squeezing in a couple extra pages of their book. It's truly amazing to watch!
My Project
As a new teacher, it is essential for me to add more books in our classroom. I want to continue to inspire my students love for reading, and adding additional books will help me achieve that goal. I'd also like to introduce leveled readers into the classroom. I have a few students that are low and receiving reading intervention, i'd like to be able to create buckets for each individual student with books that are hand selected for them according to their reading level. The addition of these leveled readers would also help me continue to mark the progress of my on-grade level and above-grade level readers. I currently do not have enough books in my classroom to support this idea, so adding to our library is crucial to their growth!
My students also need a carpet for our reading area.
The charcoal rectangular carpet from Lakeshore Learning will be used to expand our reading area, so students can continue to improve their reading stamina by being comfortable during the process! Our school supplies one rug per classroom, but that is currently being used at the front of our classroom for group activities and transitions. It currently isn't providing enough space to support my students during our silent reading time. They like to choose between alternative seating and the carpets to read, and this would provide just enough additional space!
