Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I am teaching TeChNoLoGy! I am teaching classes from PK-5th. While I'm teaching an array of grades, most of the classes are from PK-2nd Grade. Majority of the students in the school are Hispanic/Latino and many of them speak in Spanish when they are at home.
With economic disadvantages, all students are receiving both breakfast and lunch in school.
After surveying my classes, it appears that most students are without computer access once they get home. Those who do have access are using their parent/guardian's cell phone or a tablet that is shared within the family.
Over the past 2 weeks I have been floored with the amount of enthusiasm these students have been showing towards learning computer science!
My Project
This year I am fortunate enough to be teaching technology to various classes ranging from PK through 5th grade. While I am ecstatic to be supporting our students in becoming digital citizens in the 21st century, I am need of some read-aloud stories and picture books. Some of the wonderful books I am asking for include titles such as : Dot! Hello Ruby, Secret Coder Series, What Do You Do With a Problem amongst others. My plan is to use these books as lesson openers for my young and dual language learners, giving them a stronger foundation for the new concepts they will be learning. Introducing lessons through relative stories that students can relate to, will also offer them a better understanding of important concepts they need to know.
