My class is made up of gifted and high-achieving students. They are some of the hardest workers I know and are role models for other students. Each day, they come in eager to learn and achieve!
Although my students are high-achievers, they have issues like all other students and need every advantage possible to help them meet their achievement goals.
They have attention deficits and hyperactivity as well as hearing and vision issues. They have emotional and environmental issues that interfere with learning. I spend a lot of time repeating directions and redirecting students' attention because I am competing with the tech world in which most of them live. To make sure my students get the academics they need, I need to be able to teach using materials that hold their attention and are relevant to their lives. It's a challenge every day!
My Project
Since Common Core has been instituted in our state, teachers have had to scramble to find the best curriculum to use for each subject. I was lucky enough to be introduced to Storyworks. I have used it for the past three years and love it!
Storyworks, by Scholastic, has everything I need to teach English Language Arts!!
It has high-interest stories that are very current and always teach a valuable lesson to my students. The magazine teaches its readers how to be good citizens as they practice curriculum skills. It includes grammar practice, debating issues, comprehension practice and loads of writing opportunities. I begin with an video made by the author of the central story and then use all activities and projects included in the issue. Each issue has enough material to last at least a month.
Ours is a Title 1 school and most of my students have trouble paying for a subscription. I would be lost without this valuable resource and my students LOVE getting the newest issue.
