The students in my classroom have a strong desire to learn. Their minds are so inquisitive and they are always asking questions and want to know more! I frequently hear my students discussing what they are learning with each other and also say things like, "What are you reading?", and " I can make a text to text connection!" As their teacher, this is so exciting! This lets me know that they are being exposed to a lot of books and are excited about it themselves. We put a big emphasis on reading at our school because we believe it is so very important.
My Project
My first graders have just recently been diving in to non-fiction texts in reading and also during writing. I shared one of my favorite Steve Jenkins books with them, Actual Size, and their minds went wild! They asked if I had any other books by that author and to their disappointment, I only had two!
Steve Jenkins believes that, "Every book starts with an idea.
Usually the idea is really a question. It might be a question that a child asks, or something that I'm curious about myself."
I love that philosophy because that is what I too try to instill in my students. Whether they are writing a new nonfiction all about book or they are searching for texts to learn something new themselves!
Every student book that is placed in my classroom library is treated with love and care. All of these books have been chosen with my students interest in mind and their desire to read more from this author.
