“Be the good you wish to see in the world.” -Gandhi
“No act of Kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted" -Aesop
“Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” –Golden Rule
These are some of the quotes that inspire my students daily. We read the entire Wonder series this school year and took on Kindness, Perseverance, and Respect as some of our guiding principles.
My students are part of a Title I School, which means that many of them are coming from low socio-economic backgrounds. Despite this, my students are thoughtful, helpful, resilient, and hard-working individuals. I always push them to be the best they can be, and they manage to rise to the occasion.
I want to inspire my students to know anything is possible, despite any set-backs they may come across throughout their lives. I hope to expose them to the generosity and kindness of the world, despite all of the negative situations that they hear on the news. My hope is that once they see that others are willing to be charitable and concerned about their classroom needs, that they will pay that feeling of gratitude forward in the future to help others.
My Project
This year, I have a group of very low readers, possibly my lowest ever; however, I am SO eager and excited to make this their most successful reading year ever, and get them up to the end-of-year reading benchmark levels and beyond!!! Unfortunately, most of my students do not have access to quality books outside of my classroom library, and at this time, I do not have a large number of lower level books to support most of the readers in my class.
These books will provide my students with opportunities to choose books that interest them, on their current independent reading levels, so that they can build confidence, and move quickly to higher reading levels!
Reading books which are too difficult can cause students to shut down as they reach their frustration levels, which can lead to them to dislike reading. I will not allow that to happen!
Despite their low reading levels, my students absolutely LOVE independent reading time! With your help, I can provide my students with a multitude of quality fiction trade books that will help them to grow, and take them to places they never imagined could be possible! They will continue to look forward to reading each day because of you!
