Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Today we're kindergartners at a STEAM school, tomorrow scientists, technologists, engineers, mathematicians and artists! In order to become those future professionals, my kindergartners need to be creative for their Mother's Day project with the requested mini canvases, markers, paper and other supplies.
My kindergarten classroom is made up of diverse, energetic 5 and 6-year-olds in a southern Arizona Title I, STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math) school.
99% of our students qualify to receive free lunch. Almost all of my students are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico and the Middle East. All come from low-income households, living in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. Seven different languages are spoken in our classroom. My kindergarten classroom is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. Their parents often do not have the money to provide them with materials to develop their creative skills at home. However, they strive to do their best against the odds and are always very excited to come to school and learn. Besides, they teach me something new every day.
My Project
We need mini canvases, markers, colored paper and dot dabbers to create a Mother's Day project. Each year my students create something for their mother for Mother's Day. This year, they will be making finger print hearts on the mini canvases. After they put their finger prints on the canvases, they will make a pattern around the edge with fine tip sharpies. They will also make a card using the Astrobright paper and the dot dabbers, adding little notes with the markers for their Mother's Day project. I will print a photo of each student to include on the front of the card.
My students are very creative and I know that these Mother's Day gifts will be the best ever!
