Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small country school located within the city limits. On a typical day at our school, you will see students participating not just in math and language arts, but also in units of in-depth study for our International Baccalaureate Program. These units focus heavily on science and history and are often incorporated into our math and language arts curriculum.
Our students are masters of Inquiry.
Through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP), students learn how to question their surroundings and what they are learning both in and out of the classroom. Our students experience inquiry on a daily basis.
My Project
Our school librarian is AMAZING! If you look up the phrase "above and beyond" in the dictionary, there is a picture of our librarian, Mrs. Plewes. She spends a lot of her own money to make the school library a place where children want to be.
The Mt George library is more than just another place to check out books; it's a place where students go to interact with each other and learn in a down-to-earth, relaxing environment.
Mrs. Plewes has turned our school library from a drab portable building into a bright, engaging place to hang out--much like the teen room at our local city library. Students come in to play games, host art lessons, or just chill in a beanbag chair and read.
This project is designed to help fulfill Mrs. Plewes' wish of updating the library technology. Currently, we have 3 dinosaurs, I mean, desktop computers, for students to look up books to check out and to browse our newest online reading platform, Tumblebooks. There is never enough time for all the students to utilize the computers in the library for their needs...because the computers they are able to use are old and slow. The 5 Chromebooks requested in this project will work two-fold, as students will be able to quickly access the information they need in order to allow others time to do the same. In addition, by replacing the desktops with Chromebooks, additional floor space will be opened up to allow for more shelving for books. Students are able to check out their own books as well, instead of waiting for Mrs. Plewes to scan their barcode. However, this requires an iPad, which we don't have. These items will assist Mrs. Plewes in taking our library to the next level.
