As we are preparing in our class for new rigorous nationwide educational standards we also need to be up-to-date with the most technological way to read. We have two e-readers in the classroom and two more would allow us to have reading groups using the e-readers.
We live in Illinois.
My students are diverse, they and their families speak multiple languages. They have opportunities to use technology in school but not as much at home. We are a technology-driven school that wants our students to be tech savy and ready for college and future career opportunities. Fourth grade is a transition year where the expectations are high and the foundation for future schooling is laid.
My Project
This project is aimed at increasing technology use in our classroom. Students who struggle with reading especially during a class read-aloud can follow along on the Nook. Having two additional Nooks in the classroom will allow for groups of students to meet and have literature circles. Books in our classroom library receive yearly wear and tear and the Nooks will allow for all students for years to come to benefit where library books regularly need to be replaced.
Students are expected nowadays to be able to fluently read and comprehend text on a computer screen.
We have not given these students enough experiences reading text on a screen before expecting them to perform on standardized tests given on computer. Students need to routinely read and comprehend text on e-books. This is their future and this preparation needs to be started now.
