Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are part of an Early Childhood Learning Center comprised of entirely “at risk” students. I have twenty preschoolers in my morning class and twenty in my afternoon class. The majority are from low-income families, many are second language learners, and a number of them are currently facing crisis situations such as homelessness, custody disputes, and stress from mental illness.
Learning to express their feelings appropriately and develop social skills and problem solving strategies are top goals and challenging tasks for most of them.
We are in need of a chart stand so that we can display song charts for the songs we are learning like “How I Feel” and “Shake a Friend’s Hand”. The chart paper will be used to record student language for posters and class books about our feelings and friends. We will also use the bins on the stand to store the books we have about making friends, emotions, problem solving etc, so that they are easily located in a “teachable moment”. The puppets will be used to role play family situations and practice working out solutions to problems.
Your support of this project will help my assistant and I as we guide students to develop skills that will enable them to have a solid emotional foundation on which academic skills can be built and strengthen their ability to handle the challenges life sends their way. All of us have lemons in our lives. We just need the skills to use them to make lemonade!
