We are the second largest school in our district that directly impacts our military community along with low income and ESE communities. We house grades PK- 8 in our buildings, including the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military. This makes us a population that serves military families and military students. Our school directly impacts the military community it is built around. These demographics make our school a very diverse population.
Our school is also a Title I school, which means the majority of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunches.
Some are displaced while others are homeless. To give these students the opportunities they all deserve, we must provide a quality learning environment. Being Title I, those essentials are few and far between. Our students are bright, they are resilient, and they strive to be the best they know how to be, but they also want to be more than that. It is our responsibility to make those things happen to them no matter what it takes.
My Project
Being a first year teacher, accumulating resources takes time. I have yet to establish a working library for my Kinders, but I know these non fiction titles listed are quality books that would go with various lessons within the class and would be ulitilized daily. My students absolutely love learning about animals and I know these would be a great addition. Being able to not only teach my children about new animals but being able to emphasize the importance of compassion for all living things and conservation is very important to me. I believe getting this message across at such a young age will truly be so beneficial. Kindergarten is not only the time to show the love for reading but to expose the kids to the numerous types of reading that is available and the important messages that they contain. Granting us this wish list will not only help my current children in my room but the children in my room for years to come!
