As a teacher in a low-income/title one school in Alaska, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, I aim to keep things positive, creative, and to inspire them with meaningful learning experiences.
My students are energetic, motivated, and love to learn.
They like to read, to write about their lives and interests, and they love positive attention. Many of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Challenges in their lives can prevent them from getting ahead in their early years and they may not be provided with the experiences in life others enjoy.
When they walk in the door of my classroom, they are met with a handshake, a smile, and a positive comment to welcome them to a fantastic day of school. I focus on their potential, interests, and growth. Every one of them wants to learn and I can help facilitate the best day of learning possible.
My Project
My students love to learn about animals and what better way to practice essential second grade reading, writing skills than with the backdrop of an interesting and engaging animal? Second grade students are expected to write a complete paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details, and an ending sentence. They should learn about non fiction text features like headings, table of contents, and glossaries. We plan to write a four page report with paragraphs focusing on topics such as animal body features, habitat, life cycle, and food. These Pebble Plus animal books contain information on all of these topics, and with an interesting and easy to navigate layout as well.
When students have the ability to choose which animal they want to learn about, engagement is turned up several notches.
When we have these non fiction animal books added to our classroom library, students will have a multitude of animals to choose from when learning important non fiction reading and writing skills.
