"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read." ~Mark Twain
My students are creative, loving, and hardworking.
They enjoy engaging in hands-on, creative, cooperative activities throughout our day, but during reading time, they are reading to curl up with a good book and get lost in a new world. Our school is a charter school with a project-based learning focus and a STEAM initiative. While our focus is often on creativity, problem solving, and doing things with our hands, ensuring students have a LOVE of reading and getting amazing literature into their hands is of great importance to me.
My Project
We will use our Jerry Spinelli books for read aloud, independent reading, and student-led book clubs. Students will engage in thoughtful discussions about these books, have provocative, deep thoughts about theme, symbolism, and life lessons, and demonstrate their learning through a visual essay. As we focus on one author, we will work to develop an understanding of the themes and ideas Jerry Spinelli likes to write about. We will have many opportunities to compare and contrast and make connections between the stories.
By being able to provide each student with a copy of the class read aloud and a book club book by Jerry Spinelli, we will easily be able to return to the text to justify our thinking as we have discussions, develop new ideas, and create culminating projects that show how the books have changed our lives.
With multiple copies of these books in the classroom, I won't have to WISH my students had a copy to refer to and they will be more successful!
