My students need access to early chapter books, like the Henry and Mudge series, to inspire their love of literacy, making predictions, and getting to make connections with their favorite characters.
I work at a school where 61% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My class is an integrated prekindergarten room, which consists of students aged three to five years old. The class consists of 30% students who have Individualized Education Plans. The students are learning through investigation, exploration, and building their curiosity through a science-based curriculum every day. Their success is vibrant through their dedication, perseverance, and above all their smiles through the numerous unit-learning projects we have completed. Some ending projects include creating a “save the millipedes” video that was broadcast on our daily news to the whole school, to working with Scholastic Books to publish a book about “Building Around the World.” My ultimate goal is to build every student's love for learning, and to keep enriching my students’ lives to help assist them in building the best educational foundation I can.
My Project
Literacy has always been a huge part of my daily classroom activities, but I wanted to give my students more. I wanted to instill a lifelong love of books in my students and expose them to different kinds of books. The students may only be of prekindergarten age, but one aspect in which I have learned as a teacher is to expose them to as much as possible.
I will use the Henry and Mudge books series to expose my young readers to a variety of literature.
I have been borrowing the books from other colleagues, but they are in high demand as all students love them. When Henry and Mudge books are available in the classroom, the books are the most popular books in the classroom.
Students can be seen peeking at the next chapter we have not read, and reading the story through the pictures. They love making predictions about what they think will happen next in the story, and even more when we get to read just one more chapter because they cannot put it down. From books like Henry and Mudge Collector's Set, Henry and Mudge Collector's Set #2, and Puppy Mudge Collector's Set students will have these materials available to them on a daily basis.
