Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are looking for ways of Empowering Students Through the Arts by bringing a drum line to our school. This project will allow our students to be creative while showing competence of fractions in their drum line.
Our school is a Title l magnet school.
We have a very large number of English Language Learners as well as low-income students. They lead a very sheltered life and school is one of the few safe places in their lives. Some of our students qualify for the magnet or robotics program that our school has. The students that we are targeting do not. These students are in danger of falling through the cracks as they lack the support for school at home since their families are working multiple jobs just to survive. These students have been practicing three to four days a week after school and are starting to sound really good.
My Project
Our students will be using this drum quad to learn how to March in a drum line while using fractions to beat out different times. One of the many benefits of being in a drum line is that it creates muscle memory which is beneficial in math because it helps the student memorize facts so that they do not have to think about the fact, they just know it. A quad tenor drum is critical to a drum line. There are four different drums that the drummer needs to learn how to use while marching in multiple patterns. This stimulates the brain and will help the students learn best in other areas of the school day. Aside from this, being in a drum line is simply fun. It gives students a reason to come to school and do their best.
Please help us empower our students through the arts.
Our students need this extra special activity for our school to help inspire them to learn math while learning music, working in teams and thinking creatively. Our students are already showing their dedication to this by staying after school 3 days a week to practice, and they are showing a growth in their math scores. Thank you for considering the needs of our students.
