This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
When you don’t have books available at home or school, it’s hard to develop a love or desire to read. My students have not yet been able to experience books that capture their attention and imagination. The books I have requested will open their eyes and opportunities to the wide word of literacy.
My students range from Kindergarten to Second grade, all whom have special needs.
My students have a love and desire to come to school each day and learn, even with the heightened challenges they face academically and socially. My students attend a high quality school filled with a dedicated staff and support personnel who truly care about them. Many of my students’ home lives however are not conducive to learning, and many of my students come from homes and a community with high poverty.
My Project
My students will be able to experience the wonders of the classic childhood stories that I have included. Students get the most from a story when they are able to relate to it, or complete a follow-up activity that focuses on the meaning of the story. I have a few projects that I have prepared for my students that use books (The Hungry Caterpillar and There Was an Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything) as a basis for the activity.
My students will learn that there are authors out there that are able to take your thoughts and imagination to a whole new level, and who can really make you become a part of the book. After reading some of these books my students will be motivated to learn how to read and write, after seeing what a good book/story looks like.
Basically, by having quality stories we will help change my students’ thoughts and ideas about reading.
My students truly are a great group of kids who love life and are thankful for everything they are given.
While writing this project I keep having thoughts of what some of them in particular will say or do when we have books that their interested in, and those thoughts alone are enough to make me smile. I hope I am able to share with someone what a great classroom community we have, and what a big difference 30 books will make in so many children's' lives. Thank you for reading our project.
